Geography Class 10 Chapter 6 Population Solutions

Q1. Compare and classify the population densities shown in the squares ‘a’ and ‘b’ representing 1 sq. km of area. If in figure B, one sign = 100, then what will be the sex ratio? (a) (b)

(a)

In fig. (a) density of population is 7 persons per sq. km.

The region is sparsely populated.

In fig. (b), the density of population is 18 persons per sq. km.

The region is densely populated.

(b)

Given that, one symbol = 100 persons.

Since there are 10 female symbols, there are:

10 × 100 = 1000 females

Since there are 8 male symbols, there are:

8 × 100 = 800 males
If number of males = 1000,

then the number of females = ?

∴ Sex ratio = `(1000 xx 1000)/800`

= 1250

Sex Ratio is 1250 females per 1000 males.

Q8. Distinguish between Average life expectancy in India and Brazil

Average life expectancy in India Average life expectancy in Brazil
1. The average life span of an Indian is around 68 years. The average life span of Brazilians is around 75 years.
2. Life expectancy in India is less than in Brazil. Life expectancy in Brazil is more than in India.

Q9. Distribution of population is high in which river basin of India?

Distribution of the population is high in Ganga river basin of India.

Q10. Expectancy of life is still less in developing countries.

Expectancy of life is still less in developing countries- Right

Q11. Explain the similarities and differences between the population distribution in Brazil and India.

Answer

Similarities:

In both Brazil and India, the population is unevenly distributed depending on the physiography, with densely forested areas having lesser density.

The Amazon Basin in Brazil does have low population density due to dense forests, poor soil, and difficult living conditions. The Himalayan mountain range in India also has a low population density because of its steep terrain, cold climate, and inaccessibility.

Differences:

India is the second most populated country in the world while Brazil is the fifth.

The highest concentration of the population in India is in the northern plains while Brazil is the southeastern coastal lowlands.

Q12. Give a geographical reason. Population is an important resource.

Answer

Population is an important resource as it is the human resources that ultimately affect the progress of a country.

Its qualitative aspects like literacy and life expectancy contribute to the economic and social progress of a nation.

More educated the population, more is the skill supply which will be used by industries to manufacture products.

Apart from that, it will lead to more development of technology. This will eventually contribute to the economic prosperity of the country.

Q13. Give geographical reason. Brazil’s population density is very less.

Answer

Brazil is the fifth largest country of the world in terms of area. According to 2010 Census, Brazil had a population of 19 crores and was the fifth most populated country in the world.

Brazil occupies 5.6% of the world’s total area and contributes to 2.78% of the world’s population.

Also, the population growth rate of Brazil is declining as it is trying to control population growth.

Due to the above reasons, the population density of Brazil is very less which is 23 persons per sq. km. as per 2010 census.

Q14. Give geographical reason. India’s population density is high.

Answer

India’s population density is high because most of the areas have natural resources that support agriculture and industries.

Other factors like water availability and numerous cities have also caused the growth of population.

Population in India is unevenly distributed. The northern plains have been densely populated for centuries due to fertile land, availability of water, and economic activities.

Rivers like Ganga and Yamuna provide large tracts of fertile land apart from water. Also, the terrain is not a difficult one to travel.

Due to the availability of even fertile land and water, they prefer settling in the northern plains as opposed to the desert areas of northwest India.

Q15. Give geographical reason. The density of population is sparse in Amazon basin.

Answer

The Amazon basin in Brazil has tropical rainforests as it is closer to the equator and it rains throughout the year.

It has dense and diverse flora and fauna which is unfavourable for human inhabitation. Almost half of Brazil area is covered by the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin.

The dense forest makes human settlements very difficult in those areas.

Rain forests aren't a very friendly environment for human habitation, i.e. lack of fresh water, dangerous animals, lack of solid ground, lack of dry shelter, skeeters, dense trees, limited fuel and food sources, and difficult transportation

Q16. Give geographical reasons. Population density is high in the Ganga plains.

Answer

The Ganga plains of India have a high population density due to many reasons.

The northern plains have been densely populated since centuries due to fertile land, availability of water and economic activities.

Rivers like Ganga, Yamuna provide large tracts of fertile land apart from water. The moderate climate, fertile land supporting extensive agriculture.

Also, the terrain is not a difficult one to travel.

The topography is good for transport and industries.

Due to the availability of even fertile land and water, People prefer settling in the northern plains as opposed to the desert areas of northwest India.

Q17. Giving examples, correlate climate and population distribution.

The relation between climate and population:

High rainfall causes growth of dense forests where human settlements are very few, like the Amazon basin in Brazil and northeastern states in India.

Extreme climatic conditions like arid and cold areas reduce the human population. For example, the savannah in Brazil and the high altitudes of the Himalayas in India are less populated.

Areas with a climate that supports agriculture are most populated, like the northern plains in India and coastal lowlands in Brazil.

Areas with moderate climates are also well populated, like the deciduous and coastal areas.

Q18. How much percent of the world’s land is occupied by Brazil?

5.6% of the world’s total land is occupied by Brazil.

Q19. India ranks ______ in population in the world.

India ranks first in population in the world.

Explanation:

India ranks 1st in population in the world as of 2023, surpassing China.

Q20. Is the following sentence right or wrong? Correct the wrong one. In Brazil, people prefer living in the southeast as compared to the northeast.

In Brazil, people prefer living in the southeast as compared to the northeast- Right

Explanation:

In the south-east, there are coastal lowlands where agriculture and industries have flourished and there are more human settlements. While the north-east has unfavorable conditions due to the dense forests.

Q21. Is the following sentence right or wrong? Correct the wrong one. Literacy rate is higher in Brazil than India.

Literacy rate is higher in Brazil than India- Right

Explanation:

As per UNESCO, the literacy rate is the total number of literate persons in a given age group, expressed as a percentage of the total population in that age group. The literacy rate has always been higher in Brazil but the rate of growth of literacy rate is higher in India. The difference in the literacy rate comes mainly because of the population difference between the countries.

Q22. Number of females _________ males in a region is known as sex ratio.

Number of females per thousand males in a region is known as sex ratio.

Q23. Observe the following graph and answer the questions given below- India- % of population (2016) Which type of graph is this? Which age group has the highest population? Write class interval of age groups given on Y-axis. Whose number is more in males and females of age above 60? How much percent of females are found in age group of 55 to 59 years? The age group of 10 to 14 years has the highest population.

The class interval of age groups given on ‘Y’ axis is 5 years.

In the age group of above 60 years, the percentage of the male and female population is almost the same.

This is population pyramid which shows age and sex of population.

The age group of 30 to 34 years has the highest population.

The class interval of age groups given on ‘Y’ axis is 5 years.

In the age group of above 60 years, the number of females is more than males.

In the age group of 55 to 59 years, females are more than 2%.
